He wrote that Alan had nightmares as a child, and believed that only The Clicker - a light switch his mother gave him - could defeat the monster of Dark. However, he left a contingency - a shoebox full of his possessions and a story about a writer, called Alan Wake, who will one day defeat the Presence once and for all using a magic artifact called The Clicker. So Zane cut out her heart, found the darkness within it, and used it to write himself, Cauldron Lake, Dark Presence, and everything else out of the world. However, Barbara came out wrong - her body was instead inhabited by a Dark Presence, a creature alien to this world. Thomas Zane was a bestselling poet who discovered the power of the Cauldron Lake to bring written things into life - and eventually used it to resurrect his dead lover Barbara. Door said he himself was in all of them at the same time, endlessly shifting between them. In one world, there was a writer who wrote a story about a cop. Door, and he told me that there are many worlds - side-by-side, on top of each other, some inside of others. They share a lot of similarities in the meta-aspect of their plots that kind of gives me the feeling that MP2 might have been a bit of a warm-up for a story like Alan Wake, in the same way you could interpret Alan Wake as a warm-up to a story like Control. It's also interesting if you are particularly into Remedy's previous games, specifically Max Payne 2. I like American Nightmare but I agree it's probably not worth playing unless you really get into Alan Wake as a whole, especially since Control has basically rendered it non-canon or at least unimportant in the great scheme of things. I guess you wouldn't HAVE to play them but I think they do a good job of fleshing out Alan Wake himself as a character and completing his arc, which sort of peters out in the main game in order to wrap up the main plot. Not worth it by itself.ĭo you mean American Nightmare? Alan Wake did get two DLCs but they were just two bonus "episodes" and were generally considered to be two of the better ones. Note: the Alan Wake dlc is not nearly as good as it is mostly just weird.
